The foundations for the success of the 2021-22 winter season had already been laid during the summer, when Dolomiti Superski meticulously worked on a technical solution to connect the ski pass and the Green Pass, as the main barrier to entry to access the lifts. ascent according to the anti Covid-19 guidelines. The project proved to be a great success and the 2021-22 winter season was able to kick off on time on 27/11 and 4/12/2021 in the various districts.
The start of the season (the first openings took place for about half of the ski areas on November 27, 2021, the second half opened a week later) was a great success. The enthusiasts really felt the great desire to ski and even the international media lined up to document the restart after a winter of total closure. Compared to Sunday 16 December 2018, + 5.2% of passages and + 6.1% of first entries were able to be recorded. Compared to the same day of the 2017 season, the increases were even + 38.8% and + 29.9%. The direct comparison with the start of the 2019 season, the absolute record season, is instead weaker. Although in the 2021-22 season the snowfalls were not as abundant as the year before, the 21-22 winter season started with over 700 km of slopes open (58% of the total) and 300 ski lifts open (67% on the total). This figure is slightly lower than that of the early 19/20 season and slightly better than 18/19. The timely opening of the Sellaronda in both directions on 4 December 2021, which is always taken as a benchmark or barometer at the beginning of the season, was very positive. It should also be said that in the period of December the Dolomites were able to take advantage of the generalized lockdown in Austria by being able to welcome tourists coming mainly from Northern European countries who used to frequent the Austrian ski areas before Christmas.
The main period of the winter holidays between Christmas 2021 and Epiphany 2022, on the other hand, recorded a slight slowdown compared to 2018-19, with the passages increasing by + 1.31% but the first admissions and the ski days decreasing respectively. 0.9 and 3.19%. Compared to the record 2019-20 season, however, the gap across all three key metrics was 6-15%. In this phase of the season, an average number of daily passes of 1.85 million and 137,000 first admissions were recorded. In 2019-20, both figures were slightly better.
The temporary crisis then occurred in January 2022. In neighboring countries, which are also the most important areas of origin of our customers, at that time the anti-Covid-19 restrictions were tightened and Italy introduced mandatory tests for people vaccinated upon entering the national territory. This too probably prompted many potential guests to postpone or even cancel the skiing holiday in Italy. The result was a 21.5% decrease in passages and a 20% decrease in first admissions between 7 and 31 January 2022 compared to the same period 19-20.
The first week of Carnival (18 / 02-25 / 02/2022) was also in decline. Here we see a -19% of passages compared to 2020 and -10% compared to 2019. On the first entries there is a -18% compared to 2020 and a -10% towards 2019. Considering the entire Carnival period, that is the during the week of Shrove Thursday and Shrove Tuesday, this year there are -10% of passages and -13% of first admissions compared to 2020. However, it should be emphasized that 2019-20 without the closure of March 9 would have been by far the best winter ever in the Dolomites.
With regard to the individual types of ski passes, the following can be summarized: at the official end of the 2022 season, on 25 April, the sales of the Dolomiti Superski day pass were higher by 19.3% (the best result of the previous 3 seasons), 3-day skipass registered a + 18.7% (always increasing compared to previous years). The (usually) workhorse of Dolomiti Superski, the 6-day ski pass, on the other hand, lost 1.3% over the 19-20 season and between 12 and 20% over the previous winters. The number of Dolomiti Superski seasonal ski passes sold also decreased by just over 23.3%, even if these drops in long-term passes can be interpreted with the uncertainty that makes the guest opt for the short-term ski pass alternatives. term. In addition, other alternative products were also offered such as the Superski Family and the new, more flexible Superdays card.
Some further statistics: the day with the highest number of passes during the winter season 2021-22 was Monday 28/02/22 with 2.52 million, the day with the greatest number of first entries was New Year's Eve (31 / 12/2021) with 168,800 skiers on the slopes in the Dolomiti Superski.
The official start of the new season of Dolomiti Supersummer is scheduled for 21 May 2022, with 120 ski lifts open in the Dolomite valleys during the hot season and in autumn.
