The third edition of the Ski Rental Summit, the conference organized by the Prowinter exhibition of Fiera Bolzano, brought together 200 users among charterers, producers, safety managers, instructors and many other operators in the world of snow in an online working session.

Prowinter organized a digital convention that put the ski rental sector and other related issues under the magnifying glass such as the new European rental regulations, the charterer's legal responsibilities, the training and placement of personnel and the importance to team up by combining their interests in a real association.
The data relating to the rental business during the winter 2019/2020 were exposed by Alfredo Tradati, coordinator of Prowinter Lab, the team designated by Fiera Bolzano who conducted the research, and are the result of a four-year analysis.
Research methods and tools "The study followed two parallel methodologies - affirms Alfredo Tradati - In direct contact with the charterers we supported the analysis of the official data of the Italian Chambers of Commerce, crossing it with the search by Ateco code". The data of both channels were eventually compared and integrated, giving rise to a single detailed database of Italian rentals.
There are 981 rentals "surveyed" by Prowinter Lab, a number that includes all rental facilities, even those that do not rent exclusively equipment for winter disciplines.
Focusing on the 2019/20 winter season, the data reveal an increase in the audience of skiers present on Italian ski areas. "Although the season ended early due to the global pandemic, we can say that winter went well, especially in the Alps. Less on the Apennines, given the lack of initial snow "- declares Geraldine Coccagna, Prowinter Exhibition Manager - The skiers who spent the days on the track were more than 11 million, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous winters.
In the light of Prowinter Lab's research, it is estimated that 44.8% of the skiers present on the track use a rental service. These numbers, if compared with an average per capita expenditure of 60 euros, generate an overall turnover around the reality of the rental of 372 million euros. The rental public is made up of 70% of foreigners who use this service for transport reasons and because they are more culturally accustomed to the reality of rental.
Equipment and shifting of equipment Although most rental centers now offer a wide range of products for different disciplines, Alpine skiing, snowboarding and ski touring (increasingly growing) are the most profitable sectors for renters. The surveys conducted by Prowinter Lab show that each rental has, on average, 495 pairs of skis. 23% are replaced annually.
«Of particular relevance is the figure regarding the number of skis that are sold by the manufacturers to the hirers - analyzes Tradati - According to FESI (Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry) data, 111,765 pairs of skis sold at Italian rentals, equal to 50% of total ski sales. ”Equivalent to the numbers of skis, here are the data referring to the boots which mark an average presence of 476 pairs per rental, with a seasonal shift rate of 22%.
The hottest topic: the safety of the equipment When it comes to winter disciplines, safety is one of the key themes. "Bottom, edges and bindings are the components on which professionals must pay more attention to ensure user safety - he says Geraldine Coccagna - especially the bindings are the subject of the only two standards in force that each charterer should respect: the ISO 11088 which indicates the parameters on the weight, height, age, level and length of the skier's sole, which are essential for the regulation according to the bindings skis and ISO 13993 for pre-season maintenance of the binding ».
From the work carried out by Prowinter Lab, however, it emerges that the majority of rentals do not fully comply with the indications of the only "certain" rule concerning the rental. In fact, only 46.6% of renters use specialized software for ISO 11088 regulation, while the remaining 53.4% is based on their experience. With regard to the ISO 13993 standard, the data are even more worrying: according to the surveys, only 2.14% of the total rentals have and use electronic equipment to check the regularity of the attacks.
Furthermore, these numbers are not mitigated by the data relating to the safety tool par excellence: the helmet. Prowinter estimates that 196,000 helmets are present in the Italian rental system for an average of 200 rental helmets and the shift rate of the latter, on specific demand, has not been expressed.
