THE TEST:
During the past winter season 2020/2021, as unusual and "particular" as it was, I had the opportunity to test the brand new Out Of goggle, the Electra model.
From Out Of I already knew the goodness of their products but I had never had the opportunity to wear one of their masks.
I had followed their Electra project via internet and social networks which, thanks to a chip mounted on an "intelligent" lens, autonomously and thanks to the ambient light encountered, could change the brightness of the lenses and therefore say goodbye to those annoying light and dark caused by sudden changes in brightness that you encounter when going down the slopes or in a wood doing freeride.
I tested Electra for about two and a half months both on the beaten track (having the possibility of using the few open facilities for the training of the athletes of the clubs on the national territory as a Fisi stf coach) and off-piste during freeride and ski mountaineering training.
I was also able to test Electra in some "heats" of giant slalom.
Electra arrives protected by a semi-rigid case that protects the mask when we put it in the backpack, for example. Wrapped in its microfiber goggle bag that allows you to clean the lens when dirty.
Worn, it offers an excellent fit and comfort whether we wear it with or without a helmet, the visibility due to the lens is very wide and the strap is easily adjustable.
The tested lens is the acid green mirror E-green and the “total-black” frame and strap give the mask a truly captivating look.
What to say overall Electra from Out Of is aesthetically a bomb!
But let's get to the facts ... does the aforementioned technology really work?
Yes, the lens changes in intensity and brightness according to the light conditions we are going to face in that stretch of slope, bringing the skier a great benefit both in terms of performance and safety.
In less than a second at the speed of a blink of an eye, we find ourselves having the best brightness and intensity of the lens for the lighting conditions in which we find ourselves at that moment.
We perceive the change in brightness of the lens but it does not cause visual and eye discomfort.
The chip integrated into the photovoltaic cell is very small and is positioned on the upper part of the lens and does not cause discomfort at the level of the visual field, it is barely perceived if we really go and look for it with our eyes and does not take away space from the overall view.
The goggle is very light, in all respects identical to a "traditional" ski goggle, the only peculiarity lies in the lens technology.
I tested Electra on days with snow and rain and on days with dense fog. I skied with Electra on cloudy days and on sunny days with a lot of glare, both on very cold days and on warm, almost spring days. The goggle has never suffered from bad weather and has always worked by adapting the lens to my visibility needs.
CURIOSITY'':
We know from tests carried out in Ushuaia by the Italian Alpine ski team that in timed descents with good sunlight compared to descents with less light conditions due to clouds, the athlete always lost three to four tenths on the same track.
Lower performance when facing the slalom course with less light due to the clouds.
Electra could fill this void due to the light and dark present on the track (trees, slope changes, shaded areas) or the sudden changes of light due to the sun / cloud weather conditions, when visibility becomes less and everything flattens and the skier cannot get the depth of his field of vision.

WEAKNESSES:
Stiffness of the lens.
The lens is rigid, personally I have never been bothered by the stiffness of the lens both in freeride and on the track, but for a competitive use only in the alpine race such as, for example, in giant slalom or special slalom, it could be a problem if the lens hit a pole.
(I would like to do a specific test to see how the lens responds to a possible impact at high speed with a giant slalom or special slalom pole)
Price.
The price of the mask is high at the moment but the guys at Out Of have told me that with the development of technology the prices to the public will drop to make Electra more affordable for everyone.
CONCLUSIONS:
Bottom line, Electra works! It's a bomb!
And it also works well, managing to always provide us with the best brightness our eyes need at every point of the track or slope we are facing.
Exceptional if used for ski competitions, where this technology will find great use.
