After months of tension, doubts and insecure indiscretions, Spain leaves the Olympic race in Sapporo, Vancouver and Salt Lake City.

The COE (Comite Olimpico Español) has withdrawn the Barcelona-Pyrenees 2030 Olympic bid. The announcement comes after the governments of the two host regions, Aragon and Catalonia, failed to reach an agreement.
Among the various problems there are the equality of the places where the events were to take place but also political problems as the independent Catalonia did not want to include Aragon in the project.
Indeed, both regions had presented their plan to the COE with alpine skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, mountaineering and freestyle in the hands of Catalonia, while biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, speed and artistic skating, and short track in Aragon. . the main node on the events remained on alpine skiing as Aragon had proposed to divide the races and carry out the closing ceremony in Zaragoza, leaving the opening ceremony in Barcelona.
Furthermore, the ambitious plan for the tests of jumping, bobsleighing and sledding had been put on the scales, calling into question the infrastructures of Sarajevo '' 84 completely abandoned and vandalized also due to the civil war of the 90s. A crazy project more than 2000 km away.
If Catalonia has its faults on the one hand, Aragon has also taken a bit of its own by not showing up at the meeting between the two regions and the Spanish Olympic Committee for approval of the plan.
However, the problems do not end there: Catalonia had planned a regional referendum to carry out the candidacy, but given the discrepancies it was postponed indefinitely, among other things with the protest of the potential negative impact on the Pyrenees due to climate change.
Reason why The IOC had already postponed the technical visits to validate or not the candidacy.
The disappointment of the COE can be read in the words released by President Alejandro Blanco who had already announced at the beginning of June that the project could not continue if the two regions had not found a common agreement: "We had other brilliant candidates who unfortunately did not go ahead. of the strong competition from the other candidates "speaking of the candidacies of Madrid 2016 and 2020." In this case we have destroyed ourselves, there is no other way than to withdraw our proposal ".
As far as Spain is concerned, the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona remain in hand, while Sapporo in Japan, Vancouver in Canada and Salt Lake City in the United States play their part in the 2030 candidacies. Vancouver and Sapporo certainly start in the lead also because Salt Lake City will almost certainly aim for 2034 considering that the 2028 Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles.
