The shortlist of candidate cities will arrive Monday from South America, which will be able to continue the preparation of the dossier for hosting the 2016 Winter Olympics.

In the new phase of dialogue introduced by the International Olympic Committee with the 'Agenda 2020 to revitalize the race to host the Olympic Games, the first formal moment has taken place in recent days. The IOC session taking place in Buenos Aires will take note of the demonstrations of interest received and, after a possible creaming, will invite to proceed with the application in view of the final decision that will be taken in twelve months.
This is a choice that few times in the past, although with different and more complex processes where it was already possible to define a ranking among the candidates, has generated exclusions; it happened the last time in the process for the Summer Games in 2016 when Doha did not pass the filter for the request to dispute the Olympics in October outside the space that the calendars of the various federations reserve for the Olympics.
There are four demonstrations of interest for the Winter Games of 2026 and the CIO more than skimming would, paradoxically, the need to grow to avoid being faced with almost obligatory assignments as on the two previous occasions. Calgary appears as a respectable bid but is subject to a popular referendum on November 13 whose outcome is anything but obvious and could put Canada out of the race within 6 weeks. The demonstration of interest in Stockholm that would bring the Winter Olympics for the first time in Sweden is lacking at the moment of political support; the recent elections have returned a scenario with complex majorities where it will be difficult for the Swedish Olympic Committee to gather the necessary political guarantees that must reach the IOC by January. Italian availability remains, now in the form of Milan-Cortina, still in full swing and that does not leave Lausanne quiet after the unexpected outings for the Summer Games of 2020 and 2024. With the risk of not being in your hands, the Buenos Aires session is almost a foregone conclusion that it will promote these three candidacies by sending a formal invitation to proceed with the candidacy.
Who could fall next Monday is the Turkish Erzurum: there are security problems related to the Middle Eastern situation to which for some days reasons have been added after the rumor has been leaked the use of the Sochi facilities for Bob and Sledding, a place that at the IOC, after the scandal Russia - doping - Rodchenkov want to forget as fast as possible.
Going beyond the bureaucratic deadline of the shortlist, the concerns of an election that could go desert in twelve months are growing in Lausanne. Agenda 2020 provides that applications are by invitation and, if so, the IOC would have carte blanche to proceed and agree with a "safe" venue. We already anticipated a couple of months ago as Salt Lake City and Barcelona stand at the window. The US can not by internal agreements to the movement to stars and stripes engage in the Games before the development of Los Angeles 2028 to the point that they have communicated interest to the winter edition of 2030 but in case of an intervention by the IOC would be ready to respond '' Present ''. The same for Samaranch junior with a Spanish candidature to be accepted to earn Olympic credits.
