2030 Olympics at the foot of Mont Blanc?

The 2030 Olympics could have a new candidate in a joint program between three countries led by Switzerland. although the Swiss Olympic Committee could consider it a little premature with the intention of not excluding any future possibility.

While the candidacies of Sapporo and Vancouver have suffered a real setback due to the already known rumors of legal problems and lack of support from the Canadian respectively, the Swiss newspaper "Les Temps" speaks of a possible joint geographic candidacy between Chamonix in France , Valais in Switzerland and Italy for the 2030 Winter Olympics. The IOC is reportedly evaluating this candidacy after last month it announced an opening to new cities given the complicated evolution for the cities of Salt Lake City (which is undecided whether to aim for 2030 or 2036), Barcelona- Pyrenees-Aragon (raised the white flag in June 2022) and precisely Sapporo and Vancouver giving even more time than expected for nations to get organized as long as it takes place in cities that have already hosted previous editions of the Winter Olympics. The announcement scheduled for this year has been postponed to 2024, which could also include the 2034 candidacy. It is therefore an initiative in the Mont Blanc region to concentrate efforts on an ecological and economic project that is also useful for climate change which is hitting winter sports hard. In Switzerland, the organization of the Olympics has been missing since 1948 with St. Moritz, since then it has failed in 1976,2002,2006 and 2026, the latter in favor of Milano-Cortina. In this regard, the involvement of our country in two consecutive Olympics is surprising, while for France it would be the fourth time that Chamonix opened the dances in 1924; subsequently followed by Grenoble in 1968 and Albertville in 1992, the last edition coinciding with the summer ones. In any case, the small mountain village will have to ask its citizens for support again following the example of the Japanese city of Sapooro for the third time in five years when in 2018, the population of the canton of Valais rejected the candidacy in 2026 with 53% of votes.
