Sapporo leads the 2030 Olympics. Vancouver and Salt Lake City towards potential retirement

Sapporo estimates higher costs with difficult management as Vancouver falters before the state government.

The situation regarding nominations for the 2030 Winter Olympics is evolving day by day despite the fact that the final choice will only be made at the end of 2023 at the next IOC congress in India. Japan grappling with the criminal troubles of Hiroyuki Takahasi, former member of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, remains the favorite to win the candidacy with Sapporo. After the excessive spending due to both the Tokyo Olympics and the pandemic that had shaken hopes for 2030, Sapporo has decided to raise the cost estimate compared to the previous budget. The Japanese government estimated a cost between 274 and 300 billion yen (1.86-2 billion euros) while now the bar has risen between 297 and 317 billion yen (2- 2.15 billion euros) with the construction cost that will rise from 4 to 49 billion yen (27.2-333.5 million euros). A budget that will be presented at the Sapporo city assembly on November 8th. This makes the Japanese city perhaps the only desirable winner also because from its overseas opponents there is a wind of possible withdrawal of their candidacy. Vancouver does not have the support of the British Columbia state government due to excessive spending with Alberta which had mentioned earlier this month a Canadian counter-candidacy with the city of Calgary (already defeated by Milan-Cortina for 2026), perhaps also to take advantage of the renovation of the Calgary Flames stadium. In parallel, Salt Lake City has also pulled the oars a bit in the boat preferring the possibility of running for 2034, a more logical option considering the summer Olympic session in Los Angeles in 2028. Officially both North American cities are still in the running, but Sapporo flies towards an almost certain victory. The Japanese city hosted the games as early as 1972 and subsequently Nagano won the 1998 Olympics, but for the official status it will be necessary to wait another year after the IOC congress was moved from May to October 2023.
