Russian brace in women's competition, but Valieva collapses after controversy: Anna Shcherbakova triumphs

Figure skating: the 15-year-old involved in the doping case of these Games, in the lead after the short, finishes fourth and in tears. The reigning world champion also takes the Olympic title by beating Trusova and Sakamoto.

A dramatic ending, but not at all surprising given what has happened in the last few days. Kamila Valieva, the great favorite for success in the women's individual competition, collapses in the free program (with a fall immediately on the initial triple Salchow and then again in the first part of the exercise), devoured by the pressures and tension accumulated after the positivity emerged last week and that had not prevented her from being able to go down on the ice, thanks to the decision of the TAS of Lausanne to suspend the possible disqualification of the phenomenal Russian skater. At 15, however, it was really too much for Valieva, who closes fourth and in tears, on the day when the Russian school still triumphs with the gold and silver brace of Anna Shcherbankova and Alexandra Trusova: the champion of the world in office signs a score of 255.95 points which is enough for the first Olympic title, even if the best free of the day is the compatriot, second with just over 4 points behind. The bronze medal goes to the neck of the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto, who precedes Valieva by 9 points. For Russia, the hat-trick seemed done and it would have been an incredible result, given that only one country has managed to monopolize the podium, but at the men's level, at the Olympic Games. Let's talk about the Americans who were first, second and third in Cortina 1956.
