First Chinese to win a medal in Speed Skating with Bronze in the 500 meters at PyeongChang 2018, Gao enters even more Chinese sport by becoming the first to win an Olympic title in the specialty.

Gao takes to the track in the seventh pair, out of 15, and sets the Olympic record with 34.32, sitting down to wait for the moon following opponents who still have to go down on the ice.
The only one to approach him is the South Korean Cha Min-kyu (34.39) who doubles the PyeongChang Silver while the Japanese Wataru Morishiige (34.50) gets on the third step of the podium, two tenths ahead of the world champion in charge on the distance, the Canadian Laurent Debreuill who has to settle for fourth place.
Jeffery Rosanelli, best of the Italians, is nineteenth with 35.08 while David Bosa, in 35.168, is twenty-third.
