The first woman in the history of Italian speed skating to win a medal, anything but a surprise considering her potential and her amazing season. Francesca Lollobrigida opened the Olympic Games in a big way for Italy, with a fabulous second place in the 3000 meters, beaten only by the Dutch Irene Schouten, who practically resisted until the last lap.
