Andrezj Bargiel wrote a new page yesterday in the history of ski mountaineering. The Polish ski mountaineer has in fact become the first man to have completed on the skis the entire route that connects the summit to the base of K2, the second highest mountain on the planet.

Bargiel, 30 years old last April, reached the peak of K2 on foot and without oxygen at 8611m and then downhill the mountain in about 8 hours. The Polish mountaineer followed the normal route up to field 4, where he had to interrupt his company for about an hour due to poor visibility, but as soon as the clouds had cleared, Andrezj was able to resume his historic descent venedo escorted from camp 3 down to the valley by Jenuz Golab his shipping companion.
A historic undertaking because in the history of mountaineering before Bargiel only two men had tried to descend the second highest mountain on the planet with skis, the Italian Hans Kammerlander in 2001 and the Trentino Michele Fait in 2009 in both cases with dramatic results. Kammerlander had been forced to surrender after a few hundred meters due to the worsening weather conditions and above all due to the shock of having been touched by the body of a Korean mountaineer with whom he had shared the summit: suddenly rushed on skis and found a thousand meters lower. Instead, Fait had even found death by falling into a gully with skis.
After the two Italian attempts last year it was Slovenian Davo Karnicar who had to try his first outing from K2 on skis, but a sudden injury prevented him from attempting the challenge. In 2016 the same Bargiel had tried but his expedition had ended once reached the summit, because the atmospheric temperatures and snow conditions prevented him from descending the mountain with skis on his feet.
The K2 was a real obsession for the Polish mountaineer who once expressed his joy: "It was a challenge that I never gave peace to because I knew that sooner or later I would have succeeded. - told the journalist Maciej Pałahicki admitting to have encountered some difficulties both along the ascent and in the descent - according to my calculations I would have to spend only 2 nights in altitude instead of I have passed three.To sleep at these altitudes is very trying and when I started I was really tired when I was on the ski slope At the beginning of the descent the atmospheric conditions were quite good, but then along the way they changed and the visibility was almost completely lacked, so I stopped at Camp 4 where I waited an hour before the weather became lenient, and from here I went down to the valley. "
Bargiel also admitted that the whole expedition was rather risky, "The slope is not only steep but it is also very exposed to avalanches and the ice often complicates the skiing." During the descent I had to change course opting for very different areas to normal climbing routes I dedicate this feat to all those who have always maintained that it was impossible to get off the K2 with skis. "
