The Mezzalama Trophy Foundation raises the white flag, the 23rd edition canceled

Due to the limitations related to the health emergency from Covid-19, the 2021 edition of the Mezzalama Trophy, number 23, which was originally scheduled for next April 24, has been canceled. The great classic of ski mountaineering takes place every two years on the Monte Rosa massif, between Breuil-Cervinia and Gressoney-La-Trinité.

Alex Brunod, Mayor of Ayas, just elected president of the Mezzalama Trophy Foundation, decided to decide on the future of the Glacier Marathon a few days before. This bitter decision was made at the meeting on Thursday 21 January. «Having just been elected - said Alex Brunod - and making this decision together with the other members was not easy. Unfortunately we didn't have many other choices, so we were forced to cancel the 23rd edition due to the current situation of the pandemic. "" Confirming the date at this juncture - continued Brunod - would have been a gamble both for the athletes and for all those people who work with passion for the Mezzalama Trophy. We would continue to work without knowing what we were facing. Furthermore, imagining to apply all the restrictions provided and to be able to guarantee the distancing without creating gatherings is almost impossible ”. «We are very sorry - concluded the president of the Foundation - but we are convinced that we have made the best choice, because now our energies will be projected positively towards the future. It is the concept of resilience that sport and ski mountaineering teach us. In the immediate future we will think of young people, with the idea of organizing a summer event as soon as the situation permits, certain that in 2023 the Mezzalama Trophy will return with an extraordinary edition ». Even the technical director, the mountain guide Adriano Favre, is dejected by the decision taken: "In these last 12 editions of the Mezzalama Trophy - said Favre - we have faced adverse weather conditions, cold, snow, wind, postponements, but we never stopped. Unfortunately, this situation cannot be controlled. Making a decision now, without further waiting, was a duty. «We look to the future - said Favre - turning our attention to quality events. Before the next edition of the Mezzalama Trophy, our organizational efforts, also thanks to the proven collaboration with Dynafit, will be aimed at the young talents of international ski mountaineering ».
