From Lesotho to South Africa, summer skiing can also be practiced in Africa

Who said that in order to ski in summer you have to go all the way to South America or Oceania? For some years now Africa has started to focus on summer skiing, increasing investments in Lesotho and South Africa.

The most fascinating ski resort of Southern Africa is definitely the Afriski Mountain Resort (pictured) located on the Dragon Mountains in Lesotho. This tiny ski center is located at 3200 meters above sea level and offers a single track with a total length of about one kilometer that uses an old ski lift as a ski lift. The peculiarity of the Afriski Mountain Resort is that it has an artificial snow system that is heavily used during the austral winter because in Lesotho, despite the altitude, the snowfalls are quite scarce. This is why it is not unusual to find yourself in front of a unique landscape, with a white colored mountain strip (represented by the ski slope) set in a decidedly arid landscape with no vegetation. In 2004, the locality of Lesotho was the focus of some renovations to incentively increase winter tourism. A ski school was founded, a hotel-restaurant has been created with every comfort and for snow lovers a ski rental has been made available. The mountain range of the Dragons Mountains also offers another district, Tiffindell, which is found in South African territory. This town built in 1993 has a decidedly more contained altitude than the Afriski Mountain Resort, in fact it skies at an altitude of 2700 m, but has a greater mileage of skiable property. At Tiffindell, in fact, there is the only track of the entire African continent to be approved by the FIS for the dispute of international competitions of alpine skiing and there are also two other tracks dedicated respectively to beginners and absolute beginners. Both ski resorts are also very focused on summer tourism offering interesting hikes at high altitude and spectacular mountain bike trails.
