At the foot of the Matterhorn, reopen the refuge Duca degli Abruzzi "L'Oriondé"

The climb to the refuge is via an easy road. Starting from Cervinia or from Plan Maison, or you can reach the refuge with a very easy hike without difficulty, with about 2½ hours of walking . The refuge is the basis of ideal support for climbing, for the Italian normal route, the summit of the Matterhorn. Along the path there is also a spectacular waterfall, frozen in the winter months.

About 100 meters above the hut, following the path that leads to the Col du Lion and the refuge Carrel, you can find the Carrel Cross. Carrel was the first Italian to climb to the summit of the Matterhorn in 1865 and was also the first to reach the summit from the Italian side. At the point where there is the Cross, August 25, 1890, Jean Antoine Carrel died during the return of one of his countless ascents of the Matterhorn.
