In the early afternoon of today, a fire broke out in the intermediate station of the Grand Montets cableway, on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif. No one was injured, fortunately the facilities were closed for maintenance.

The flames caused the fusion of a cable and the subsequent fall to the ground of several cable cars. The fire affected the intermediate station located near Lognan, at 1,972 meters of altitude. "Maintenance work was underway and the first fires started from the maintenance area," the president of the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, who runs the plant, told France Bleu. The damages are important, they concerned about 500 square meters of the station. La Chamoniarde, a company in Chamonix (France) that deals with mountain safety, advises hikers to stay away from the area, given the concrete risk that there are still cables in the area that could fall. On the 26th of August, again on the French side of Mont Blanc, the umpteenth failure that had blocked a stretch of the Aiguille du Midi cable car. The same stretch became famous two years ago when they were blocked at high altitude a whole night 110 tourists then saved by helicopters and rescuers harnessed with ropes and pulleys.
