Cortina "The future is now"

Cortina d'Ampezzo - in the past criticized by many for not being able to evolve - returns to the limelight of the white circus with an exceptional trio: the World Cup finals (from 18 to 22 March 2020), the World Cup Alpine skiing which will take place from 8 to 21 February 2021 and the 2026 Winter Olympic games organized with Milan.
Many interventions implemented and as many will follow. The first involved the historic ski lift which for over 50 years has made one of the highest peaks in the Dolomites accessible. On Saturday 11 January, the new Tofana - Freccia nel Cielo cableway was officially inaugurated under the slogan "The future is now". The new facility, a jewel signed by Leitner and built in a record time of 6 months, came into operation on 22 December in place of the old cable car and can carry up to 1,800 people in an hour.
With the construction of the new plant, the two old cabins that carried 600 skiers per hour are now abandoned. One was donated by the company that manages the plants to the municipality of Cortina as a reminder of these last 50 years of Ampezzo history. The other cabin, on the other hand, was auctioned after purchase requests from individuals arrived to build a sauna or a hotel room inside. There are also many requests from loyal skiers to have an heirloom of the old Arrow in the sky that has brought them to the top since 1969. Some of these have been able to purchase a part of the old cable, about 5 kilos of steel laid on a pedestal.
Not just a new cable car though; the strategic interventions implemented in fact are manifold and concerned some slopes, the finish area of Rumerlo and Col Druscié, a new system for the controlled release of avalanches and accessibility interventions (in particular the remaking of the road section of access to Cortina d'Ampezzo - headed by ANAS).
But let's talk about slopes:
the historic "Olympia delle Tofane" slope has undergone an important restyling and has been equipped with all the necessary sub-services (eg construction of fiber and timing cabling, laying of new safety protections, brand new artificial snow system); "Vertigine" track is the track that will host the men's fast disciplines of the Championships; it was the subject of earthmoving works and implementation of sub-services. 2,850 meters long, it has a vertical drop of 820 meters, a maximum gradient of 71% and an average of 56%; important works also on the "Druscié A" and "Druscié B" slopes: works to bring the tracks up to standard, artificial snow system and connecting skiweg. In particular, the Druscié A now has a slope of up to 52% over an overall development of 500 m, where the special slalom races of the World Championships will take place, and finally the brand new "Lino Lacedelli" track in Cinque Torri. Inaugurated on Sunday 12 January and dedicated to the Squirrel of Cortina, who reached K2 in August 1954, changing the history of mountaineering and the mountain itself forever. The track - a 1.5 km variant of the main Cinque Torri - will be used for qualifying for the races. It is an innovative track, the first public in Italy, fully equipped for training and designed for the training of athletes even beyond the 2021 World Cup.
The challenge towards Cortina 2021 is also to redevelop hotel facilities and structures to renew a mature tourism product and make it more competitive in a global market: 19 (out of 54) hotels are already undergoing redevelopment works, some of which already concluded.
But the development plan doesn't stop there. The next intervention - as confirmed by Mario Vascellari, president of Tofana 2021 srl - will be the construction of the Son dei Prade-Bai de Dones cableway, a link that will connect Pocol (in the Tofana area) with the Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri ski area- Col Gallina, equipped with an intermediate station in Canzopé. The gondola lift will have a maximum transport capacity of up to 1,800 people per hour, will be 1.5 km long and supported by 31 pylons.
