A year after the tragedy of the Mottarone cable car, this is how the investigation of the case is continuing.

It was May 23, 2021 when cabin 3 of the Stresa-Mottarone cable car crashed at around 12.30, causing the death of 14 people. As the car was about to arrive at the arrival station, the traction cable of the system broke and the emergency brake did not come into operation. The cabin, going backwards quickly, released itself from the carrying rope at the intersection of one of the pylons and fell to the ground. Only a 6-year-old boy, Eitan, managed to survive the tragedy.

Today, one year later, at what point are the investigations into the tragic affair? The Corriere della Sera, which anticipates some more detailed information on the subject, reads: "the rope broke less than half a meter from the cast head (which is intact) due to the progressive internal corrosion that maintenance could have identified and stopped with an operation to be done every three months by removing the sleeve that protects the cast head, replacing the grease in which it is immersed to protect it from rainwater infiltration and checking the condition of the rope by touch. 2016, when the cast head was made, and that it would only take place in November 2021 when, after 5 years, it had to be rebuilt ".
Among the causes of the tragedy, therefore, the maintenance of the system that the Mottarone cableways had entrusted to Leitner stands out and is now among the 14 investigated. Multiple negligent homicide, very serious negligent injuries, forgery and the removal of security systems are challenged. Checks should have been done every three months.
