Another retreat for the German biathlon: Arnd Peiffer says goodbye to competition

After Simon Schempp, Germany greets another biathlete. The 33-year-old native of Wolfenbuettel announced his farewell to competitions via a message on his Facebook page.

A news in some ways surprising, especially given the recent results, which increasingly marks the end of a generation of biathletes: the German Arnd Peiffer announced his retirement today, with a post on his Facebook page On Sunday, the Czech Ondrej Moravec greeted the World Cup, today it's Peiffer's turn. Thus, after Simon Schempp's retirement at the end of January, Germnia loses another very important piece in view of next season. Despite his advancing age (he will turn 34 on Thursday), Peiffer's form did not seem to suffer particular drops, especially on skis where he has always set the best times, so much so that this season he had returned to success after more than three seasons, triumphing in the mass start of Hochfilzen. In his farewell message, he thanked all those who accompanied him in his career: "Today the time has come to say goodbye. I made this decision after long reflections; this season I still achieved good results (victory in the Hochfilzen mass and in the Nove Mesto men's relay, in addition to the silver medal in the Pokljuka pursuit). I thank all those who have accompanied me in these thirteen years in the German team; I have improved as a man and as an athlete. Thank you all! " In the World Cup he collected sixty-six total podiums (thirty-six individual and thirty team), of which eight wins individually and six in teams. At the Olympic Games he won gold in the sprint of Pyeonchang 2018, as well as silver in the men's relay in Sochi 2014 and bronze in the men's relay in Pyeonchang 2018. Also notable is his world record, where he won seventeen medals : five golds (mixed relays of Chanty-Mansiysk 2010 and Hochfilzen 2017, sprint Chanty-Mansiysk 2011, men's relay of Kontiolahti 2015 and individual of Oestersund 2019), six silvers (mixed relays of Chanty-Mansiysk 2011, Oslo-Holmenkollen 2016 and Oestersund 2019, men's relays of Oslo-Holmenkollen 2016 and Oestersund 2019, individual of Pokljuka 2021) and six bronze medals (mixed relays of Pyeonchang 2009 and Rhupolding 2012, men's relays of Pyeonchang 2009, Rhupolding 2012, Nove Mesto 2013 and Anterselva 2020). Therefore, in the final stage of Oestersund, Arnd Peiffer will take part in the last races of his career, where who knows who will not be able to get on the podium once again to crown a splendid career full of successes.
