Seven years after the victory of Marie Dorin and Martin Fourcade, France imposes itself in the twenty-first edition of Biathlon auf Schalke thanks to the push of an exceptional Simon with a Claude at the height of such a great partner. At the shooting range Tommaso Giacomel pays for the inexperience of the event and with Dorothea Wierer closes in ninth place with 6 errors in the final pursuit.

The public packed the Veltins Arena until sold out for the return of the World Team Challenge to the Gelsenkirchen stadium after two years behind closed doors in Ruhpolding due to problems related to the pandemic.
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first edition in 2002, the female component of the couples is regal with Julia Simon, Dorothea Wierer, Denise Herrmann, Marketa Davidova, Ingrid Tandrevold and Lisa Hauser while in the male field, among others, Christiansen, Doll, Fabien are present Claude and Tommaso Giacomel.
The qualifying Mass Start sees the Norwegians Christiansen and Tandrevold prevail hands down (3 errors) with 25 seconds on the transalpines Simon - Claude (5) and the Czechs Davidova Davidova - Krcmar (4); last year's winners Hauser - Leitner, with 6 errors, are at 49 seconds, Voigt - Nawrath (6) at 58, the Swiss Haecki - Burkhalter (6) at 1.10.8, Herrmann and Doll (9) at 1.19.9 , the Finns Eder and Seppala (9) at 1.40.8, Dzhima - Dudchenko (7) at 1.42.3 and Wierer, very accurate shooting with only one error, and Giacomel, bad day with 10 errors, at 1.42.6.
For the final with the Pursuit, as per the traditional format, the gaps are halved. Two errors by Tandrevold launch France with an excellent Simon in command of the race and the solitary escape operation is completed by Fabien Claude even if Christiansen disagrees and the duel between Norway and France starts. It is the implacable Julia Simon of this beginning of the season, with the valid shoulder of Claude who closes it with 4 laps to go.
At the finish line Julia Simon (39/40 for her in the evening) and Fabien Claude prevail with 33.8 seconds ahead of Tandrevold and Christiansen, third place for the Austrians Hauser - Leitner at 45.4, There is no glory for the German colors with Herrmann and Doll fourth at 58.2 and Voigt - Nawrath fifth at 1.03.5. The Swiss Haecki and Burkhalter are sixth at 1.12.9. Wierer and Tommaso Giacomel fail to reverse the Mass Start situation, despite a sumptuous shooting performance by Dorothea: ninth place for Italy at 2.22.8
