Really special Olympic stories. Campbell Wright will be part of the small "Kiwi" Olympic contingent at just 19 years old. The results obtained in the last month are the key element of this selection. Away in the World Cup rankings at the start of the season, the very young New Zealander rose to the next level in the stages of the new year, in which he obtained a twenty-fifth place in the Sprint and a thirty-first place in the subsequent Ruhpolding Pursuit. Wright then clearly improved his career result a few days ago in the Individual of Anterselva, conquering a brilliant fifteenth place by committing only two errors on the four polygons.
Now every athlete's dream is a reality for 19-year-old Wright who becomes, after Sarah Murphy in Vancouver 2010, the second biathlete in the nation to win the Olympic ticket. The young kiwi thus joins the company of the listed skier Alice Robinson and the freestyle specialist, Nico Porteous, bronze at PyeongChang 2018 in the halfpipe. New Zealand has obtained a total of three medals, the first in the Albertville 1992 Olympics and the other two in the last Korean event.
BENDIKA IS DIVIDED ... INTO TWO
The Latvian Olympic Committee has selected Baiba Bendika to compete in the two disciplines at the next Winter Olympic Games. The goal of the '91 class athlete, in addition to competing in biathlon competitions, is to compete in the 30 km cross-country mass start on the last day of the Olympic event (20 February). A decision, which takes hold thanks also to her participation in the Cross-Country Skiing World Championships in Oberstdorf, last year, in which Bendika was the fastest in the Sprint qualifiers.
The Latvian then ventured into the 7.5 km free technique in Campra (Switzerland), at the end of the year, coming out as the winner. Thanks to these results, Bendika has earned her place in the Latvian national cross-country ski team, proving that she is a versatile athlete. As for biathlon, in its second Olympic participation in the discipline, it should take part in all individual events being the only representative of its country. The Latvian contingent will bring with it 57 athletes in 11 different disciplines including 7 in cross-country skiing.
