Val Martello hits the mark. The International Biathlon Union has announced the nations that will host the next major biathlon events and the South Tyrolean strawberry valley, in 2025, will organize the European Championships for the first time in the renowned "Grogg Biathlon Center", a structure that in a few years it managed to conquer an important space in the world panorama of biathlon.
The debut on the international scene took place in 2007 with the Junior World Championship, and the year before the IBU Cup, which was then called the European Cup, was held for the first time. The IBU Junior Cup, on the other hand, has been paraded in Val Martello since 2015 and was then re-launched in 2019, in 2021 and will return for the fourth time this year, from 8 to 11 December. Not only biathlon in Val Martello: the South Tyrolean valley is also a paradise for ski mountaineers and has made itself known all over the world thanks to the Marmotta Trophy, included as the 2011, 2012, 2015, 2021, 2022 and 2023 skialp World Cup. and over the years also hosting the Dolomiti Cup, the Alpen Cup, the Italian and Dutch Championships.
The European Biathlon Championship is a great milestone for the organizing committee and for all the volunteers of Val Martello, who experience first hand the sporting events, both winter and summer on roller skis, giving a show at 1700 meters above sea level in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. The president of the organizing committee, Georg Altstaetter, explained after the award: “We are very proud and satisfied to organize the European Championship for the first time. We are prepared, we will give great visibility to our sponsors and all the volunteers will do their utmost for the realization of the event ".
Klaus Hoellrigl, technical director of the Italian national team, also wanted to congratulate: “It was time for another great biathlon event to find its way to Val Martello. For years the committee has been a reliable partner for the IBU and the FISI in organizing biathlon competitions, which is why it was important to compete well in the candidacy for the European 2025. We are delighted that it worked right away, and with the expansion of the functional building we will certainly be able to experience the competitions in Val Martello in an even more organized way ”.
The renowned “Grogg” center is one of a kind: the shooting range and the shooting ramp are separated by the stream, and the facility also boasts the distinction of being the first center in Italy to equip itself with an electronic shooting range. The journey towards the 2025 European Championship has already begun.
