Einar Carrara: "My dream come back to walk"

We had the pleasure of having our microphones Einar Carrara, former biathlete of the Italian national team, who was the victim of a serious accident at work in December 2014 which caused him serious damage to the spine.

Hi Einar, how are you, how is the path of qualification proceeding? Now I'm very well, I'm home since April 10 when I was discharged from the center of Budrio in Bologna, where I was hospitalized for six weeks for the test and training with new guardians. I still train at home, in my garage, where I have the parallels and can walk with these guardians. Other days instead I train with the handbike to strengthen arms, shoulders, chest and all the part of the trunk. How long have you practiced this sport? I had already done a few sessions a couple of years ago and in winter I also trained on the rollers. At that time I was in hospital for a long time and during the periods when I was at home I was mainly a roller. But for me it has always been more a leisure, an outburst than a real sport. Have you thought about a competitive career in paraciclismo? For the moment no, I practice the handbike to be outdoors, I live it like a fun. It's a fantastic sport, I was in the biathlon national team so I'm quite powerful and I do not mind at all. In an interview a couple of years ago you said you do not want to stay in a wheelchair because you have a lot to do in life, do you want to reveal something about your future projects? At the beginning after the accident I could not even sit up, then I started training and strengthening the trunk. Slowly I was able to walk with the gym exoskeleton and I obtained excellent results in all the structures where I tested. But this does not satisfy me, because it is the car that walks and I have only learned to support it. So I understand that your goal is to go back to walking. That has always been my fixed point from the beginning. I train and fight to achieve it. Have you ever thought about starting a career in the Paralympic winter disciplines? At the moment no, I proceed step by step in recovery. In December four years have passed since the accident, there have been improvements and also several. I have obtained results that at the same injury other patients will never reach. As I said my goal is to go back to walking but from there on I do not want to do projects. In this period I am at home and therefore to keep myself in shape I have intensified the training sessions with the handbike.
