Each nation can have only one member in the Athletes Commission and canoeist Tony Estanguet will end his eight years in office with the Tokyo Olympics. The CNOSF, the French Olympic Committee, and its president Denis Masseglia had the intention of nominating Martin Fourcade in 2022, in proportion to the athletes of the Winter Olympics. But for about a month now, the barista Renaud Lavillenie has expressed the desire to enter the race in 2020 and its success would entail the impossibility for the biathlete to enter the Commission.
The French sporting world is breaking up: Masseglia admits to having spoken of the possibility with Lavillenie last year without receiving a real expression of interest from the athlete. Guy Drut, a member of the IOC, wonders what sense they had in contacting the world record holder of Salto with the Auction when the intention to push Fourcade was evident.
The fact is that to get out of the impasse, a committee formed for this purpose within the CNOSF will have to decide tomorrow whether to present next year a French candidate, Renaud Lavillenie, or to postpone to bet everything on Martin Fourcade in 2022 that would in fact be designated from now.
