The curtain opens on Pokljuka 2021: the biathlon world championship starts from the Mixed Relay, with Italy immediately protago

Tomorrow at 15:00 the Mixed Relay will officially open the highly anticipated biathlon world championships. A thrilling start for the Azzurri who appear at the start as runners-up of the world and in the open streak of three medals in the last appointments between the World Cup and the Olympics.

For the Italian national team it will be difficult to repeat the loot of medals won in the last two world championships of Oestersund 2019 and Anterselva 2020. The goal for Pokljuka 2021 is centered on two podiums and one of the races circled in red is certainly the Mixed Relay, formed in which Italy boasts a winning tradition, but which will not be traditional. Unlike the previous world championship editions, the first two fractions will be male, while the girls will close. A simple inversion of the addenda which, however, in this case could change the result considerably, since the competition scheme takes on a completely different form. The Azzurri present themselves at the starting line with an unprecedented formation but in any case among the nations with medal ambitions. Compared to the quartet that won world and Olympic medals between Pyeongchang, Oestersund and Anterselva there will be no Dominik Windisch. In his place at the launch we will see the young Didier Bionaz, making his debut in a world championship. Undoubtedly a bet on the part of the technical staff, but considered, given the characteristics of the athlete. In the central fractions, Italy will then field its big players Lukas Hofer and Dorothea Wierer, with Lisa Vittozzi in the unprecedented role of finalizer. As mentioned, the blue team will start with medal ambitions on par with Germany, Russia and Sweden, with France one step above and Norway favored by obligation for gold. The Scandinavians in fact present themselves at the start with the two titles won in the last two world editions and an apparently unbeatable quartet: Laegreid, Johannes Boe, Eckhoff and Roeiseland. In the only previous season, in Oberhof, the victory went to Russia ahead of Norway and France. Transalpini who instead won last year in the World Cup on the snows of Pokljuka ahead of the Norwegians and Germany. Here the complete Start list
