Former Austrian biathlete Wolfgang Perner died after a long illness, after a career that saw him win two World Cup races and, above all, take home the bronze in the sprint of the Salt Winter Olympic Games Lake City 2002, on the snow of Soldier Hollow, on the day he presented his nation's first five-circle medal in the biathlon world. He has participated in four editions of five circles, debuting in Lillehammer 1994.
Perner, who in the post career had opened a restaurant business in the Salzburg area, in Untertauern, had withdrawn from competition at the end of the 2005/06 Olympic season, also because of the doping scandal that broke out at the Turin Games, when he was accused (and then disqualified for life by the Austrian federation) and admitted to having used prohibited substances.
