Francesco Friedrich enters more and more in the history of the bob. The German champion at Whistler has won his fifth consecutive world title in the two-man bob, equaling the record of consecutive victories established more than 50 years ago by the legendary Eugenio Monti!

The almost twenty-nine of Saxony accompanied in the race by the usual brakeman Thorsten Margis proved once again unbeatable. Friedrich gave the Canadian Justin Kripps the satisfaction of leading the race after the first downhill, but then from the second heat on he put the turbo, taking first the leadership of the race and then to the sound of tempons crossed the line with a large margin of advantage over the rest of the competition.
The Olympic champion of the specialty has dropped 59 cents Kripps that last year had helped him on the highest step of the podium at the Pyeongchang Olympics, and 89 cents teammate Nico Walther a four-reel specialist, who seems to be back in form after the injury that accompanied him in the January World Cup races.
The Pirna phenomenon also becomes the second most successful athlete in the history of the world championships of bobsleds. In fact, Friedrich has equaled the number of gold medals won by fellow countryman Christoph Langen at 5, taking just two trumps from the Italian Eugenio Monti, who between 1957 and 1966 set the record for victories.
The numbers of the German stars are, however, much more important than those obtained by Langen, rather closely follow the results achieved by Monti that is considered unanimously as the strongest bobbist of all ages. In fact, Friedrich has won 5 world titles in 6 participations, obtaining the first world success at only 22 years of age becoming the youngest world champion in the history of the discipline. In addition, if we consider the results of last season including the Pyeongchang Olympics, the Saxonian rider does not lose a two-man bobsleigh race from 11 consecutive races or from 13 January 2018 when he was second in Sankt Moritz, numbers that make him enter of law between the GOAT of all sports.
If for the first three positions of the ranking there was no brawl, much more interesting was the fight for the positions of recovery. In fourth place, the British Brad Hall and the Canadian Chris Spring have alternated positions for the entire duration of the competition: the Anglo-Canadian duo preceded by 10 cents a disappointed Oskars Kibermanis and of 13 the Korean Yunjong Won who could be among the protagonists in the four-reel test.
The top ten is completed by the third of the Germans Johannes Lochner, eighth and never fighting for top positions, from the Monegasque Rudy Rinaldi and the Russian Maxim Andrianov.
At the world event there was also an Italian crew formed by the South Tyrolean couple Patrick Baumgartner and Alex Verginer. The blue association has also shown on this occasion to be still far from the best in this specialty by ranking in 26th place. A test in line with the expectations of the eve considering the results of this season, but that can be redeemed in a few days in the four-man bob where Baumgartner and his companions have proved to be more competitive.
The great protagonists of the bob will now return to the track next Thursday, when the first two downhill races of the four-man bob will be scheduled. Will Francesco Friedrich still win?
