The 2019-20 edition of the Bobsleigh World Cup opens in the sign of Kaillie Humphries and Germany. At Lake Placid in the first seasonal appointment, the two-time Olympic champion has returned to take back the scepter of the female bob, after a sabbatical year marked by so much controversy with the Canadian federation that led her to leave Canada to represent the United States .

On the New York state track, the thirty-four-year-old from Calgary, paired with brakeman Lauren Gibbs, has literally demolished the competition by signing the best time trials in both races. Humphries has once again exhibited all its qualities as a pilot, a rare commodity of these times in a sport that is experiencing an inexorable decline, with strength and power that by now have prevailed on clean lines and perfect trajectories.
The former Canadian driver preceded on the podium the German Stephanie Schneider, detached by 31 cents, and the debutant Kim Kalicki, authentic surprise of this appointment, which ended in third position at 44 cents from the winner. In the men's field, in the first of the two scheduled two-man bobsleigh races Johannes Lochner and Florian Bauer put an end to the very long unbeaten run of compatriot Francesco Friedrich, who did not miss a race in this specialty from 20 January 2018!
The twenty-nine Bavarian driver achieved his third success in the World Cup thanks to an excellent first run that allowed him to earn the minimum of safety advantage that guaranteed him to avoid being overtaken by the arrembante teammate Francesco Friedrich who with the best partial timeframe established in the final heat moved from third to second place only 8 cents from the winner. The podium was completed by the Olympic champion Justin Kripps, good at recovering two positions during the final descent. Fourth place for the Latvian Kibermanis who preceded the startling driver of the house Hunter Church who had even hoisted himself to the provisional second place after the first run.
In the second test in the program, Francesco Friedrich promptly redeemed himself by taking the first seasonal success paired with Alexander Schueller. The phenomenal Pirna driver on this occasion did nothing wrong, printing the best times in both races scheduled and closing with 40 cents ahead of compatriot Lochner. A show of strength that knows so much about revenge against the teammate who dared to challenge him in his favorite specialty. The top-three is again completed by the Canadian Kripps who preceded Kibermanis and Church again.
Also this year the blue bobsled team has restarted from the European Cup. The Italian team is still in a full phase of change, with many potential brakemen still to be tested on the field and others to be included, so in this first phase of the season no crew is still up to the top positions of the cadet circuit. In the first three seasonal appointments (Lillehammer and the two races of Altenberg ed) Italy in the two-man bobsled got the twelfth place with the duo Baumgartner-Ughi as the best result, while the semi-debutante driver Mattia Varriola with the brakeman Alex Verginer won an eighteenth place. So far the blue team like last year proved to be more competitive in the four-man bobsleigh, with Baumgartner-Atchori-Varriola-Ughi that over the weekend in Altenberg grabbed ninth place at 95 cents from the winner, the German Oelsner.
After a first season of pure apprenticeship, the Italian women's national team began this year with a first full time program on the European circuit. In the two races held so far the best results came in Lillehammer in the first round, where Tania Vicenzino and rookie Anna Schenk finished in sixth position, while Andreutti-Tavella finished in twelfth place. Instead, only the Vicenzino-Tavella crew took part in Altenberg, which ranked in eleventh overall position.
