A season that has given important satisfactions in particular for the skeleton boys who have touched the podium several times in the World Cup with an extraordinary Valentina Margaglio and who have reached a splendid double top ten for men at the recent World Championships in Altenberg, thanks in eighth place by Amedeo Bagnis and in tenth by Mattia Gaspari.
The skeleton opened the program of the 2021 Italian Championships with a race that was held over the distance of only one descent as the first heat was canceled due to problems with the starting track. As expected, the champion of the Bob Club Cortina Amedeo Bagnis was the winner. Thanks to an excellent push he managed to print the best time, stopping the clock at a time of 53 "06.
Behind the Vercelli, 32/100 from the summit, was placed the Ampezzano Mattia Gaspari. The bearer of the Fiamme Azzurre Sports Group showed up at the starting gate of the national event rather drained of energy in a season that represented a sort of rebirth for him after two years of stop due to double achilles tendon surgery.
If there was practically no race for the first two positions, the challenge for the bronze medal was hard fought, involving five athletes. The twenty-two year old from Bologna Giovanni Marchetti won, who preceded Gabriele Marenchino from Beinetto by just 9/100 and Francesco Pellicani from Marche by 50/100. On the other hand, Pietro Drovanti sixth and Marvin Moscara seventh, who recorded interesting pushing times. Beyond the results and the confirmation of the values in the field, the Italian skeleton championships have highlighted a great growth in the tricolor movement with as many as 8 athletes at the start, unimaginable numbers until a few seasons ago that make us look forward to the next one with great enthusiasm. delicate season, the Olympic one.
Few surprises in the women's skeleton competition. To win the gold medal and the Italian title in 2021 was the Alexandrian Valentina Margaglio. The standard-bearer of the Fiamme Azzurre Sports Group, great favorite on the eve, has practically no rivals on the track which this season has seen her fight for a historic podium in the World Cup several times this season.
Second position for Alessia Crippa from Ossola who finished with an overall time of 55 "47 accusing a delay of 63/100 from Valentina Margaglio. The twenty-year-old from the Valle Antigorio Ski Club was one of the many happy notes of this season for the young women's skeleton national team.
Excellent third place for Alessandra Fumagalli from Bergamo who played a race practically on the same times as the more experienced Alessia Crippa, finishing just 19/100 from the place of honor. The twenty-two year old ex-star has made a real leap in quality this season to the point of being selected by the Sporting Director Maurizio Oioli, in Sankt Moritz on the occasion of the stage valid for the World Cup. The other three athletes registered for the race are later. Fourth Chiara Duzioni, fifth Martina Plenary and sixth Angel Osakue. The latter in their first ever experience on an iced gut.
The program of the Italian Championships was completed by the two-man bobsleigh race held over the canonical distance of the two heats. The female crew made up of the Friulian Giada Andreutti and the Tuscan Giulia Chenet were the forerunners. For the multi-champion Italian discus thrower, the Italian championship was a sort of training in a season that saw her take to the track in very few occasions, despite this the standard bearer of the Air Force highlighted important improvements especially in driving phase.
The Italian two-man bobsled championship was literally dominated by the South Tyrolean Patrick Baumgartner accompanied on the occasion by Eric Fantazzini. The rider in force at the Fiamme Azzurre Sports Group completed both runs with an overall time of 1’44 "18. A result that confirms the great talent of the 2012 Youth Olympic Champion who has had a decidedly fluctuating performance this season.
Behind Baumgartner was placed the unprecedented couple formed by Mattia Variola and Delmas Obou. The driver from San Vito al Tagliamento thus gave the Fiamme Azzurre a splendid double, closing behind his teammate with a delay of 65 cents.
Third place for the South Tyrolean Alex Verginer paired with Mattia Banello. The Val Gardena, who usually holds the role of brakeman, conquered the third step of the podium finishing at 1 ”76 behind Baumgartner.
Interesting fourth position for Enrico Ghilardini from Emilia, in his second experience driving a bobsled in an official competition. The twenty-one year old from Imola paired with Alessandro Fierro has shown that he has great room for improvement and with the due experience in the coming seasons he could join the Baumgartner-Variola duo. Ghilardini also obtained silver in the special ranking reserved for juniors, won by Baumgartner and with the association formed by Marco Farina and Lorenzo Conti fifth overall in third place. Sixth and last position for rookie Robert Mircea flanked by Alex Pagnini, a new rider from the world of weightlifting who arrived at bobsleigh thanks to the great recruitment work that DS Maurizio Oioli and trainer Giovanni Mulassano have been carrying out in recent years to restore vigor to Italian bob movement.
In view of the next season and awaiting new entries, the Italy of the bobsleigh continues to have its point of reference in Patrick Baumgartner. The South Tyrolean driver has shown that he has greater chances in the four-man bob, where driving skills for the moment manage to limit the cents lost in the push phase.
During the awards ceremony, the athletes were able to celebrate their success wearing the official Mytho Marathon t-shirts, the new Friuli Venezia Giulia marathon that will animate the streets of Cividale del Friuli on October 31st. An unusual link between completely different sports but united by a great passion.
Passion that also rhymes with the Bob Club Cortina, the association that has been organizing the Italian bobsleigh championships for years and which now hopes to have its track open again in view of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games. And who knows, precisely in view of the Milan-Cortina Paralympics, the Paralympic Committee may not decide to include the parabob within the five-circle program, a very fascinating discipline in which the Bob Club Ampezzano has been investing for years ...
