Italy is aiming for the playoffs with the hope of making a good world championship. Canada and Sweden start as favorites.

The Men's Curling World Cup begins today in Las Vegas. Italy, no. 8 of the international ranking, starts with the aim of finishing the single round with 13 teams in the top 6, to access the playoffs. A milestone never reached in history by blue curling. Only in the mixed, different discipline, Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner succeeded in 2021, finishing in fifth place in Aberdeen. Mosaner, after the gold in Beijing, is hunting for another prestigious result with skip Joel Retornaz and his teammates Sebastiano Arman and Simone Gonin, who together with Cembra have just won the Italian title for Pinerolo. With them in Vegas there will be Mattia Giovanella, something more than a reserve as he demonstrated in Beijing. The favorites on the eve are Edin's Sweden and Gushue's Canada, gold and bronze at the Games. Absent Team Mouat, controversial with his federation for having qualified for the national championship just as he finished fourth in the mixed and silver at the Olympics. This decision deprives the fans of the possibility of another final between Edin and Mouat, after the one in the Europeans won by the Scotsman and the Five-Circles one won by the Swedish elf. There will also be no Team Shuster (USA) and Team De Cruz (Switzerland). With 5 skips on his debut and 4 on the second world championship lap, Retornaz, who instead boasts 8 World Cup appearances and is back from seventh place and the European bronze , he might even dream of playing for the medal. The direct competitors on the card are South Korea, Switzerland, Scotland and Norway.
