Switzerland’s position on the “new” World Championships in Zueger’s words: “The idea deserves consideration, but the timing is wrong”

On the one hand, the Austrian federation has been decidedly critical; on the other, the German and Swiss federations have shown themselves open to discussing solutions to make a World Championship appealing and credible for every FIS discipline, every year except an Olympic year.

Swiss-Ski has also spoken out in recent hours on the International Federation’s proposal, through comments made by Diego Zueger to the daily Blick. “The idea certainly deserves consideration,” the Swiss Ski Federation’s co-CEO immediately clarified. “We are open to it and see it as an opportunity, especially since we are not talking about doubling the number of World Championships; it would mean one additional championship every four years.

If implemented correctly, it could bring added value.”

As for starting the additional World Championships in the four-year cycle as early as 2028, rather than 2032, Zueger is particularly critical. “The most important aspect of the whole matter is the complete development and planning of the entire calendar, including the World Cup. This is essential if skiing—similarly for the other disciplines, although it is clear that the congestion is greatest in the top-level alpine skiing circuit—is to be offered to sponsors and television rights holders as an attractive package.

The communication and timing were not right: apparently, there are countries interested in hosting a possible 2028 World Championship, but the notice is too short and offers no added value with the television rights packages already assigned through 2029,” concluded the Swiss official, referring to a key aspect already defined through the winter leading up to the World Championships in Narvik (and, for Nordic skiing, in Lahti), while in 2031 the Ski World Championships will return to Val Gardena and the ski jumping, Nordic combined and cross-country skiing championships will be held in Oberstdorf.
