The International Olympic Committee has officially invited federations and organizers to ban athletes from various international competitions. What will happen with the winter disciplines?

It is a choice that is in some ways historic, given that never before has the IOC exposed itself in such a decisive way to a situation as delicate as that which is linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Executive Committee of the reference body of world sport has in fact issued a note in which it invites the "International Sports Federations and the organizers of sporting events not to allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions". Where this is not possible due to time or legal reasons, it “urges them to ensure that no Russian or Belarusian athlete or sports official may take part under the name of Russia or Belarus in such events. Russian or Belarusian citizens, on an individual or team level, should only be accepted as neutral, without anthems and flags ”.
The IOC also reiterated "its urgent recommendation not to organize any sporting events in Russia or Belarus".
It remains to understand what will happen between the various federations and, in the specific case of the winter disciplines, everything is intertwined between what the FIS will decide and what the IBU itself has already communicated for the last three stages of the Biathlon World Cup. Today's news also the decision of Visma Ski Classics, or the long-distance cross-country skiing circuit, which has excluded Russian and Belarusian athletes from the last five appointments scheduled until the end of the season.
