Snowboard beats skiing in Austria: Anna Gasser elected sportswoman of the year, Mayer and Strolz on the podium

Wednesday evening the ceremony in Vienna: the big air star, also gold in Beijing 2022, won the most anticipated award of the season ahead of the jumper Marita Kramer. Among the men, the two Olympic champions beaten by the footballer David Alaba.

Snowboard beats skiing, at least for this year in Austria. The award ceremonies that traditionally precede the start of a new winter season and celebrate the triumphs of the past one, were experienced last night in Vienna, on the occasion of the “Lotterien Sporthilfe Gala 2022”, with Anna Gasser the absolute star of the event. The two-time Olympic snowboard champion, who in Beijing won another gold medal in the big air, in fact took home the most coveted title, that of Austrian sportswoman of the year among women, for the third time in his career. After the 2017 and 2018 awards, the Carinthian champion was able to claim this title by beating another great athlete of the winter disciplines, the jumper Marita Kramer who dominated the World Cup and lost her Olympic chances due to a damn positive covid before leaving for China. At the men's level, alpine skiing was beaten as the sportsman of the year award went to David Alaba, an authentic symbol of Austrian football and again capable of raising the Champions League to the sky, this time as a Real Madrid player. The midfielder born in 1992, already winner of the 2013 and 2014 editions (in the midst of the triumphs of his friend Marcel Hirscher), got the better of the wool thread, just 2 points according to the choices of the expert jury, against Matthias Mayer , to the third Olympic title in as many editions of the Games, and to the other gold (two, considering also the team event) of Beijing 2022, Johannes Strolz. The combined Olympic champion was “consoled” with the public award (the only one chosen by home fans) as the revelation of the year.
