The countdown for the 30th Lucerne Winter Universiade 2021 has begun. The Italian University Sports Center is preparing to take part in the world event that will take place in Switzerland, from Saturday 11 to Tuesday 21 December. Thirty-three blues competing in the various disciplines, with a total delegation of over fifty members including technical staff and medical staff: "We take part with pride in the first world university sporting event after the blocking of competitions due to Covid-19 - comments Antonio Dima , President of CUSI - Being in Lucerne can already be considered a first medal for all of us after the dark months we lived in our country.
The desire of these young people to take back their sporting and academic life, redeeming everything they have lost in almost two years of the pandemic is to be commended. The strong identity that binds the soul of our young student-athletes will be the extra weapon that we will use from the first day of competitions: they will represent not only sporting Italy and the respective universities, but above all the generation that probably he is paying more the price of this disastrous period which, unfortunately, we are still living ”.
To increase the historical palmares of over one hundred and fifty medals, of which fifty-three golds, the blue delegation will try to improve the result of a gold, a silver and a bronze conquered in Krasnoyarsk in the Russian Universiade of 2019. Objective medals therefore for six different disciplines in which seventeen men and sixteen women will compete. The national alpine ski team is the largest team: sixteen athletes divided equally between skiers and female skiers, followed by the cross-country ski team with four men and three women. Two snowboarders competing complete the expedition headed by the FISI.
On behalf of the Italian Ice Sports Federation, on the other hand, two men and two women will take to the track with the Italian flag on their chest for figure skating, while only one athlete will compete in the short track. Three representatives of the Italian Federation of Sport Orientation: two women and a man for Ski Orientation, including a brother and a sister. More than twenty universities represented in Lucerne thanks to the CUSI blues: five foreign universities with two US colleges, two Austrian and one Swiss universities, while twelve athletes attend online universities.
The most represented institute is the Politecnico di Milano with three athletes who are part of the Italian expedition. "A breath of fresh air after a long run, we could summarize the spirit that will guide us to Lucerne - to speak is Pompeo Leone, head of the CUSI delegation - After the forced isolation due to the outbreak of the pandemic and the reduction of ordinary daily reports, it was difficult to keep the athletes' attention high in view of the Universiade. We have been in constant contact with the organizing committee in order to plan and carry out the event regularly despite the initial postponement and the continuation of the pandemic, and that is why we have constantly invited the student-athletes to stay active. to be ready for the call, which has finally come ”.
Initially scheduled for January 2021, the Lucerne Winter Universiade will be held eleven months late, but despite this, global membership has been high: thirty-nine participating countries with Russia fielding almost three hundred athletes, compared to Liechtenstein and Romania who will participate with two students each. This is the first time in history that the Winter Universiade takes place in Switzerland, and at the same time it will also be the last event that will carry the internationalized Italian denomination "Universiade", coined in 1959 by Primo Nebiolo: in fact from the edition venture of Salt Lake City 2023 the world championship event will take the name of FISU World University Games.
A total of nine winter disciplines foreseen by the Games calendar, in which student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 25 from over five hundred and forty universities around the world will compete.
