Petra Vlhova returns to Courchevel, after missing all seven consecutive speed races staged between Lake Louise, Sankt Moritz and Val d''Isère, including four super-gs. It's true, Mauro Pini and the Slovakian champion herself had spoken clearly since the pre-season: priority to the technical races and only a few "detours" in speed, apparently the first of this year 2021/22 will be that of Zauchensee, where on January 15th and 16th there will be downhill and super-g. Vlhova is already almost 300 points away from Sofia Goggia and more than 200 from Shiffrin, but the chances of defending the title will mainly pass from the next eight challenges between giant and slalom (equally divided), starting with the races between the wide doors on Tuesday and Wednesday on the Stade Emile-Allais. The 26-year-old from Liptovsky Mikulas has not competed since November 28, the day of second place (with a serious error in the decisive heat) in the Killington slalom, behind Shiffrin. For Sankt Moritz, after returning from the States where Petra had continued to train even in the first days of December, at the Copper Mountain Speed Center, the idea of competing in the two super-gs in the Engadine was there, but in the end it came the renunciation and the work continued last week on the snows of Sestriere. Vlhova will clearly be a very formidable opponent in Courchevel, where last year she was third (she was first halfway through the race) in the giant number 1, and went out in the final of the inaugural heat in an encore two days later. A comeback must start from Savoy, which is not easy, but the will to fight for it and not just think about the Olympics, where however there is the possibility of bringing home historical medals for Slovakia, there is indeed within Team Vlhova. Speaking of her country, Petra this morning won the Sportswoman of the Year award for the third consecutive time (she sent a thank you video), reaching myths like Anastasiya Kuzmina, biathlon legend, and the tri world champion of cycling Peter Sagan.
