A track that certainly does not represent the classic giant in all respects, if we think that there are only 315 meters in altitude and 20 seconds of initial platter, and then lead on a medium slope practically until the finish. The "Panorama" of Semmering, however, will be the scene of two days of technical competitions that are decidedly important in the women's World Cup, with the frontal challenge that starts again between Vlhova, Bassino, Brignone, Shiffrin, Gisin and all the others.
It starts with the giant, Monday with the first heat set at 10.00 (live on TV on Eurosport and Rai Sport, the same for the second scheduled at 13.00), traced by Pierre Miniotti, the French coach who will immediately start Tessa Worley. The bi world champion has caught the number 1 and arrives at this race really confident, after having found the podium in the second round of Courchevel and with the sweet memory of that giant of 28 December 2010, when she triumphed in Semmering. Tomorrow it will be exactly ten years ...
After Alice Robinson, at the start second and with a great desire for redemption after the two dry races in Courchevel, here are Marta Bassino and Federica Brignone. Bib n ° 3 for the Cuneo, fifth in Lower Austria as the best result four years ago, number 4 instead for the Aosta Valley, sixth in the last giant disputed in these parts, where the blue in the race on this occasion have never climbed on the podium (but it runs every two years, considering then that in 2014 it went to Kuehtai).
On the other hand, the one who did very well in Semmering in the 2018 edition is Petra Vlhova, who will start with number 5 also thinking about that first triumph in a CdM giant, which arrived just before the world title among the wide doors in Are. The Slovakian will precede Mikaela Shiffrin at the starting gate: bib number 6 for the American, who skipped the long weekend in Val d''Isère to better prepare for this stage, where in 2016 she was even able to place the hat-trick ( two giants competed, in addition to the slalom), as well as winning "his" slalom two years ago.
The first merit sub-group will be closed by Michelle Gisin, while the draw went well for Sofia Goggia, who will start with the 9 after Holtmann (who found herself winning in the European Cup on the snows of Andalo) and before Gut-Behrami and of the returning Hrovat. Maximum attention to Sara Hector, with 12, but also to Holdener's hunger and the two most anticipated hosts, Liensberger with 14 and Brunner with 15.
Then there will be a lot of Italy with high numbers: apart from Elena Curtoni, who will still have 31 after the two excellent points finishes in Savoie, we will see Bertani (51), Melesi (53), Cillara Rossi (54), Pirovano with high bibs (67) and Della Mea (69), with a great desire this time to conquer the missed qualification in France. Spotlights also on the 16-year-old rookie in the cup, Zrinka Ljutic, who will have the number 66 for his first performance in the maximum circuit: we will see her again in slalom, but the series has just begun ...
