A truly unique day for American skiing, the one dedicated to the descents at the national championships underway in Aspen.
Spread over two heats, the speed races that awarded the hyanno stars and stripes titles represented something special on both occasions, for several reasons. The women's downhill, in fact, was the last race of Alice McKennis Duran's career, who greeted coaches, teammates, managers and family members with a real catwalk, while Laurenne Ross, who also announced the retired from competition in the last few hours, she went on to win her final descent (although she will officially end her career at the next races of the Aspen review), beating AJ Hurt by 45 cents and another very young one by 89 the 2002 Luaren Macuga class.
A real handover, experienced with great emotions. “It is incredible to share the last descent with Alice, I am overwhelmed by emotions - said Ross in the post race - The goal was to have fun, but I have always been competitive as hell, so I knew I would try to go fast. I'm really happy to be here with all my friends and obviously it's wonderful to win my last real race ”.
And in the men's downhill another surprise came: Thomas Biesemeyer, who announced his retirement before the start of the 2020/21 season, decided to put his skis back on and ... win his first US title after seven second places. And the success was shared with Jared Goldberg (in his second national title), with bronze medalist Sam Morse 29 cents away from the two winners.
USA national championships that will continue today with two descents only in the FIS field, Monday rest day and then Tuesday 13th here is super-g and women's alpine combined.
