It was a star that shone most of all at that moment and only an absurd destiny has turned it off forever.
Régine Cavagnoud would have turned 50 today and it is right to remember (as colleague Gianmario Bonzi did on social media) what a champion missed too early in the world of skiing. From La Clusaz to the roof of the world, the transalpine downhill skier experienced the most beautiful moment in that very 2001 that then became tragic. The world title in the Sankt Anton world championship is just the pearl of a career of the highest quality, with the gold won by beating our Isolde Kostner for 5 cents.
Eight World Cup victories, including four in Cortina, on the Olympia delle Tofane which he loved so much; Régine collected 24 podiums in the maximum circuit and the super-g specialty cup in 2001, but also climbing on the podium of the general classification both in 2000 (behind Goetschl and Dorfmeister) and the following year, when he was third again only 150 points from the winner Janica Kostelic.
And the 2001/02 season had also started off well, with 3rd place in the Soelden giant before the tragedy. All fans will remember him, that damned Monday 29 October 2001 (two days after the race on the Rettenbach): a lack of communication between the French and German technicians, during a speed training session in Pitztal, and Régine found himself in front, without being able to see him after a jump in the curve, the German coach Markus Anwander, hitting him in full (the technician was saved).
Two days of ordeal followed, but the brain injuries were too severe and on October 31, 2001, Régine Cavagnoud died at the hospital in Innsbruck, leaving a huge void in the white circus.
A sad, absurd story that has taken away from us forever a real Queen.
