The memory of Giuliana Chenal-Minuzzo by the Masters of the Aosta Valley: "Forever with us"

A woman who made the history of Italian sport: the day after her death, here is another portrait of her who grew up on the Matterhorn.

Many memories linked to a unique character for Italian sport. The day of Wednesday 11 November marked blue skiing for the death of Giuliana Chenal-Minuzzo, the first woman able to win a medal at the Winter Olympic Games, with that bronze downhill in Oslo 1952. Vicentine by birth, but to all effects a Aosta Valley in heart and soul, she grew up in the Cervino Valley, trained by Leo Gasper to win everything nationally and then outside the borders, with Olympic and world medals. And so it is necessary to quote the words of the Masters of the Aosta Valley, who wanted to remember Giuliana: "After the historic medal in Oslo, at the Cortina 1956 Games she scored another female first: she was the first woman in the history of Olympics (summer and winter) to take the official oath. At his third Olympic participation, at Squaw Valley 1960 he went to medal again, winning the bronze medal in the giant slalom on 23 February. He continued the competitive activity until 1963, the year in which he won his ninth Italian title. After retiring from competitions, she opened a sports shop in Cervinia. In 2006, fifty years after the Cortina Games, he was once again the protagonist of the rite of the Olympic oath in the opening ceremony of the XX Winter Olympic Games in Turin. It was she who held the Olympic flag on which Giorgio Rocca and all the athletes swore. It will be with us forever ”.
