Sestriere, in addition to being the highest in Italian town (2035 meters above sea level), is one of the historical sites of alpine skiing. It has already hosted 27 women's events of the World Cup, the first of which - a downhill - in 1967; to these must be added the World Cup of 1997 and the technical tests of the 2006 Turin Olympics for a total of 36 top-level trials held in the Piedmont hill.
It was, however, almost 9 years Sestriere not hosted a competition of the Women's World Cup. On 9 and 10 February 2008 they were held in fact a dive - won by Lindsey Vonn - and a Super G, in which excelled on a par Andrea Fischbacher and Fabienne Suter.
Saturday is in a Giant Slalom program. Are four races of the World Cup held in Sestriere in this discipline, whose queen is Sonja Nef, who won for the second time in 2000, the first on 11 March and the second on December 19. Michaela Dorfmeister won the first event of the 2000-2001 season which took place on December 9, while Anja Pärson is the last woman impostasi in a Giant in Sestriere March 14, 2004.
Nef also leads the ranking relative to the podium of this race, adding to the two wins third place with a total of 3. The same figure for Pärson, twice second in the two races held in December 2000, while Dorfmeister is at 2 podiums .
Italy boasts one podium in the World Cup in Sestriere Giant, a second place finish in the race won by Denise Karbon Pärson in March 2004. However, you can not forget the test rainbow staged February 9, 1997 that earned him a Deborah Compagnoni the second consecutive world gold in this specialty. The champion from Santa Caterina was imposed ahead of Karin Roten and Leila Piccard.
Finally it should be remembered that the result of the race gave the Olympic gold in Turin in 2006. It was February 24 and won Julia Mancuso of Tanja Poutiainen and Anna Ottosson.
Female Giant Slalom in Sestriere will be held Saturday, December 10. First heat at the start at 10.30, the second at 13.30.
