An unpleasant controversy, which also made noise at a political and institutional level, triggered by a sentence uttered by Sofia Goggia during the interview that the vice Olympic downhill champion released in the past few hours to the "Corriere della Sera", a double signed by Aldo Cazzullo and Flavio Vanetti.
Basically, when asked if there were homosexuals among the athletes of the white circus, the star of the national team replied in this way: “Among women some yes, among men I would say no. They have to throw themselves off the Kitzbuehel Streif ”. Sofia had also talked about the situation linked to the possibility of competing for transgender people: “If we talk about sport, a man who turns into a woman has physical characteristics, even on a hormonal level, which allow him to push more. I don't think it's right then ”.
Yesterday evening, an apology from the Bergamo champion arrived via social media: “A falling tree makes more noise than a growing forest. I am sorry and I apologize to all the people who felt offended by the sentence that came out in the Corriere interview which, surely, when I said it, it did not want to be of a discriminatory nature ".
In the meantime, reactions were unleashed on several levels, up to the intervention of Ivan Scalfarotto, undersecretary of state at the Ministry of the Interior, who wrote on Facebook: "I read dismay that according to Sofia Goggia a gay athlete would not be able to go downhill. Before saying such things, kind Sofia, it would be better to stop and think twice: speed is an advantage in the race but with words it can become a big problem ”.
The president of Arcigay Bergamo Cives, Marco Arlati, had invited Goggia to "apologize for his words full of stereotypes", but "The Sentinels of Milan" also intervened on the statements of Sofia (" the blue ski Sofia Goggia is strong, from today instead we know that she has a stereotypical idea about homosexuality from the age of the caves. So there would be no gays among Italian skiers, because no one would be brave and male enough to challenge a downhill so dangerous. If it's a joke, it's not funny. If it's really his thought, it's bleak "), and Vladimir Luxuria speaking at Radio Capital.
“A truly humiliating thought, this idea of measuring heterosexuality through manhood is absurd. If one is capable of defying certain heights it does so regardless of sexual orientation. That of the Goggia is a somewhat old idea, according to which gays in front of a steep descent come back screaming and wagging. For some, sport has always been a demonstration of machismo. Already said by men it is terrible, but said by a woman it is truly humiliating ".
