A four-way challenge, as in the nights of Semmering and Zagreb? Everything seems to portend this, or a new stellar confrontation between Petra Vlhova, Mikaela Shiffrin, Michelle Gisin and Katharina Liensberger in the fifth slalom of the World Cup, the last one before Cortina 2021, scheduled tonight in Flachau (first run at 18.00, the second at 20.45, both live on TV on Eurosport 2 and Rai Sport).
Let's start with the cup leader, both in terms of specialty and absolute: Vlhova, who will start with bib number 2, has already moved from St. Anton to Flachau on Sunday, with some small doubts related to a pain in the knee following what success in super-g on Karl Schranz. Doubts dispelled with an excellent slalom training yesterday, 450 curves on two types of track, in the morning on very hard snow and then in the afternoon on the bar to simulate what will be found today in the race.
Mikaela Shiffrin was able to prepare exclusively for this slalom, as well as working on the giant thinking about the two races next weekend in Kranjska Gora: "The last sessions were very good", confessed the American yesterday in a virtual conference, as reported "Ski Racing". The four-time slalom world champion has not won in her favorite discipline since 29 December 2019 in Lienz and in Flachau she rejoiced for the last time in the 2018 edition, before being beaten by Vlhova in 2019 and 2020.
On Sunday evening, those who interrupted the sensational streak of 28 consecutive slaloms won by Petra and Mikaela, or Michelle Gisin and Katharina Liensberger, intervened live at the ORF. If the Swiss is unlocked by finally winning the World Cup in Semmering, continuing with the podium in Zagreb and a good super-g in St. Anton (eighth), for the second place in the general classification, the 23-year-old native of Vorarlberg he wants at all costs to give back to Austria a victory that has been missing for more than 6 years among the tight posts (Nicole Hosp in Aspen, 30 November 2014).
Liensberger was missing 11 cents in Semmering (from Gisin) and 5 in Zagreb, always second but behind Vlhova, but she is the only one to have always climbed the podium in the four seasonal slaloms and seems really ready, technically and mentally, to crown the dream in the home race. "I made my World Cup debut here in 2016 and, in 2019, I took my first podium with a 3rd place - said Katharina on her eve - I will give everything to ensure that my performance is enough for the top". That is, the first victory in the World Cup.
