Sofia Goggia officially confirms split from her longtime skiman “Babi” Greppi: “A truly important person to me”

A decision that had already been made for weeks, to the point that she returned to training on the glacier with the changes already in place, well before departing for Argentina this Sunday. 

On the eve of her departure for more than a month of training overseas, Sofia Goggia wanted to officially say goodbye to and thank her longtime skiman Barnaba Greppi, after already parting ways with the coach who had worked with her in recent years, Luca Agazzi (who has moved to the giant slalom team), with Gianluca Rulfi now directly overseeing the Olympic downhill champion, and welcome Markus Gufler, who worked with the Norwegian youngsters last season.

From Bergamo like her, “Babi” Greppi was truly an important figure in Sofia’s professional and personal life, as can be understood from Goggia’s own words: “I don’t think this is news, but I hadn’t written anything about it yet and I wanted to tell you that from now on Markus Gufler will be my new skiman… Wilkommen!

I’m very happy to have you by my side from now on to fine-tune my Atomic skis, and I can’t wait for this new adventure together – her words on social media – Babi, what can I say… it seems like yesterday that we took this photo in June 2020 (the one at the beginning of the article, ed.) during the ‘Stelvio protocol’. How many years we spent together, how many adventures and emotions.

We won a lot, you helped me become a more successful skier, you were my backbone. Thank you for helping me and for always being there. Looking back, I smile thinking about the wonderful professional achievements we reached together, but I don’t think only about the podium finishes and victories, the cups and medals. What will stay with me most from these years, and what I will carry inside me forever, are the moments we shared on a human level, also away from the slopes: our endless journeys during which I always had so much fun, your “ciao fans”, the many laughs, Mina on the chairlift, Berry “Whites” in the ski room, discussions about the “big questions”, the love you put into making my skis faster, your boundless passion for downhill, not to mention Koenigdisziplin.

They were magnificent years and you were part of them. Nothing and no one will ever take them away from us! My “mission” continues even though you are now retired. I will treasure everything you taught me, all the experience I accumulated with you: thank you for everything, from the bottom of my heart. You were and are an important person to me. I love you and I promise you that I will “try to behave”.
