Twenty-four hours, plus minute, minus minute.
The time elapsed from a wonderful triumph, “the most beautiful of his career”, in Saturday's crazy descent in his Cortina, re-embraced after 4 years with another victory, to the fall that can ruin everything.
A similar thing had happened in 2018, precisely after that first success on the Olympia delle Tofane complete with a red bib (which he had never worn before), with the fall on Pomedes' schuss in the encore descent on Saturday, but there was no damage '' had been and we all know, a few weeks later, what would have happened in Korea ...
This time, the crash in the super-g in the Scarpadon area cost Sofia Goggia dearly: a deja vu that no enthusiast would have wanted to experience, from 31 January 2021 in which the Bergamo woman broke the lateral tibial plate of her right knee in Garmisch, thus losing the World Cup in Cortina (always in his destiny), on this bitter January 23, 2022.
The diagnosis made official a couple of hours ago by the FISI medical commission does not leave much room for interpretations, because we certainly cannot joke with a partial injury to the cruciate of that left knee that already broke in 2013, and a fracture to the fibula (albeit small). At stake is the entire career of Sofia, which we are sure she wants to reach up to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games (and back again to the Olympia delle Tofane ...), but if the doctors who they know better than anyone, that is Andrea Panzeri and Herbert Schoenhuber, have given freedom to those words of Sofia to want to try for a sensational participation in the Olympic descent on February 15th, then there can and must be hope.
First of all it should be specified that this is an extreme attempt and only for such a "big", so important race: the World Cup, for the Bergamo-based player, is essentially over unless a positive feedback from the Chinese challenge can allow Goggia to try then also to defend its leadership in the ranking of specialties, in the following appointment at the end of February in Crans-Montana (where there will be two descents).
Certainly, the dream of the general, which was alive and how looking at the calendar and the performance of Shiffrin and Vlhova in speed, has vanished today considering that the giant of Kronplatz and above all the descent and the super-g of Garmisch will see Sofia only as a spectator. The role of standard-bearer at the Games? A huge question mark, but frankly it seems impossible to see her parade next February 4th in that Beijing stadium, considering the crazy race she is called to take to the gate of the first downhill test, Saturday February 12th.
The Olympic calendar, in fact: no giant, first race for women on Monday 7 February, no super-g on the 11th, then from 12 to 14 the three days scheduled for testing towards the race on 15, the only goal remained to try to accomplish a feat of annals (and it would be even just showing up at the gate).
