Taina Barioz says enough to 30 years and after a thousand injuries: "I listened to my body and my heart"

The French gigantist announces goodbye to competition: for her two podiums in the World Cup almost seven years later and too much bad luck

She was probably one of the athletes most affected by bad luck and now, at just 30, she has decided to hang up her skis. Taina Barioz retires, with two podiums in the World Cup almost 7 years apart (from Lienz's 3rd place in December 2009 to 2nd in the Sankt Moritz 2016 finals giant) and the gold won at the world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in team parallel. For talent and stubbornness, however, the gigantist born in French Polynesia could really have achieved much more, without the thousands of injuries of a career always stopped on the most beautiful. The last, tremendous blow, last December with a new injury to the anterior cruciate knee during a training session at Zinal; already in the following days, Taina had expressed on social networks all his frustration and disappointment for a new stop after starting the season well (13th in Killington) and now, "after several months of reflection", the announcement of the withdrawal has arrived . "A beautiful page of my story is running - Barioz wrote - I hesitated for a long time, but the last wound was harder than the others to collect and I think it is necessary to listen to your body. I also listened to my heart and, knowing that I will miss competition skiing, I have other horizons that I can't wait to discover ”. The balance is however traced with a smile, in thanking all those who accompanied her in this long adventure in the white circus, from the family to all the companions, technicians and staff: "I spent 14 years in the national team, passed in a flash I had so much fun. I learned a lot and experienced incredible emotions; I keep everything from the best moments to the hardest ones that made me stronger. I met wonderful people with whom we will remain friends for life, I cried, raised my arms, discovered the most beautiful slopes in the world and rejected my limits. I lived a nomadic life with pleasure, where we live in a group and then find ourselves alone, at the starting gate. I put so much love into it and I'm proud of all this ”. A true hymn to skiing and sport.
