Off to the Semmering triptych, for the appointment in the Lower Austrian town that will close the 2022 Women's World Cup.
It will be Mikaela Shiffrin, who did the finishing work today in Reiteralm together with Katharina Liensberger, who will open the third giant of the season on Tuesday morning with bib number 1, she who signed a trio of successes in 2016, when on the "Panorama" c ''It was the same race schedule.
In this case, the giant number 1 (Wednesday the encore, then it will be the turn of the slalom) is due to the cancellation of the opening of Soelden: start at 10.00 with the 1st heat, on Swiss tracking (by the South Tyrolean technician Alois Prenn), then at 13.00 the decisive one with its own US brand design (both appointments live on Eurosport 1 and Rai Sport).
The problem, but it's certainly not new around here, concerns the temperatures and how long the track will be able to hold: already this morning it reached 10° above zero, so lots of water and then it climbs onto the Panorama, hoping that the reaction be good after night. Important numbers in the 1st heat and the leading blues picked it up well: Federica Brignone, who is still looking for the 50th podium in the CdM, will start second, while with her red bib here is Marta Bassino in third, in great shape and fresh from the triumph of Sestriere, given that the super-g outing in Sankt Moritz we don't believe will leave any waste, also considering that the Cuneo area was doing very well on that occasion too.
Fede and Marta have never been on the podium at Semmering (where the only Italian success in giant slalom came twenty years ago with Karen Putzer), but objectively it is a question of little indicative data considering the few precedents and also the cancellation of two years ago. Aside from the short initial plan, the Panorama can be a favorable track.
Mowinckel will instead start with number 4, followed by Vlhova (last winner here between the wide doors in 2018), a Worley in search of redemption and perhaps the main rival of the blues, Sara Hector, who certainly didn't go very well in this draw evening, given that in these conditions number 7 could be a problem for the Olympic champion.
Lara Gut-Behrami will start with number 10, after Grenier and Gisin, but Troops and Gasienica-Daniel could do well, closing the second group ahead of Liensberger and Holdener, the first after fifteen.
Without Goggia and Curtoni, there will be five other Italians at the starting gate: with number 40, in total confidence here is Asja Zenere, 11th in Sestriere and with three victories in the series in the giants of the European Cup, but in addition to the second qualification attempt of the Vicenza , here is Roberta Melesi with the 44, the tricolor Elisa Platino with the 56, fresh from the first podium in the continental circuit in Ponte di Legno, the absolute debutant Annette Belfrond (born in 2002 daughter of art that we will see at the start with the number 64), and the return between the wide doors of Laura Pirovano, the last athlete registered with bib number 68.
Lara Colturi, in her third giant with the Albanian flag, will look for the pass for the 2nd heat starting 59th, just before the debutant (born in 2004) from Switzerland Nathalie Grob, a talent to keep an eye on. Speaking of Swiss, Corinne Suter is back in giant size, with number 32 for a good test and then thinking about the speed races scheduled for January.
Tomorrow we will see Tina Robnik returning to CdM, 3 months after the right knee injury suffered in training, who certainly cannot be at 100%, as she herself admitted also during the last training sessions to her colleague Virna Pierobon, who l ''he intercepted at the end of a work session at the foot of the "Aloch", in Val di Fassa. Of course, finding a talent like that of the Slovenian gigantic skier is already good news to close 2022. She will start with number 39.
