In December there will be 50 editions from the first time in the World Cup: Val Gardena already celebrates

On December 15th and 16th, when the superG and the male descent on the legendary Saslong are scheduled, 50 World Cup editions have passed since the first White Circus race in Val Gardena.

That was the first time on February 14, 1969, when the pre-season descent was won by the Swiss Jean-Daniel Dätwyler and since then the South Tyrol valley, except for a few exceptions, has always entered the calendar of the Men's World Cup. Today, as far as men are concerned, 54 races, 16 superGs, 2 giants, 1 slalom, 1970s World Championships, and the mythical parallel of 1975 where Gustav Thöni battled Ingemar Stenmark was home to his fourth World Cup. Yesterday athletes and former athletes, organizers and many fans celebrated this 50th anniversary of the World Cup first time in Val Gardena. "We are very pleased with this jubilee, but even more for these incredible 50 years, 50 years when Val Gardena hosted the World Cup every year - says on saslong.org Rainer Senoner, chairman of the organizing committee. It has been a great pleasure to review and greet so many collaborators and athletes who have become friends, and together with them we have been able to remember the many hours spent together. " "It is awesome to see how efficiently and professionally the gardeners year after year have put up World Cup races," added the president of the Bolzano province Arno Kompatscher. All this is an unbeatable spot for South Tyrol and is greatly appreciated internationally. " 120 participants recalled in a procession the many special moments, such as the 1970 World Cup assignment at Beirut's FIS Congress, the previously mentioned parallel to Ortisei and the small rogue that came alongside Kristian Ghedina, one of the Kings of Saslong. Other moments were the "premiere" of Jenni Perathoner and Luca Langgartner's official World Cup Val Gardena song and the presentation of the winners' trophies for the December races: the descent trophy was created by Gregor Prugger, created in lime wood, 70 cm, and on the end embellished with a white acrylic paint. The winner of the Super-G will be awarded with a work by Jonas Senoner. His trophy is also made of lime wood, finely framed in bronze and 60 centimeters high. At the festivities there were also two camels to remember the most famous stretch of the Saslong, camel humpbacks. Among the guests, there were twice the winner of the Peter Fill, Ghedin, Herbert Plank, first blue triumph over the Saslong with a memorable victory in 1977 on a frozen bottom, Michael "Much" Mair and numerous sports stars past and present. In addition to Kompatscher, there were the mayors of the valley Moritz Demetz (Santa Cristina), Rolando Demetz (Selva) and Tobia Moroder (Ortisei), the parliamentary Daniel Alfreider and the assessors Florian Mussner and Martha Stocker.
