Hannes Reichelt, today in Lenzerheide, announced his retirement from competition, with his last of the 305 races in the World Cup which will result in the Garmisch super-g finished in 17th place, last 6 February. Tomorrow, on the occasion of the super-g of the finals, the veteran of the Wunderteam and world skiing, one of the symbols of the last 15 years in speed, will greet everyone with a sort of catwalk, not being qualified for the last specialty race of the season, after stopping in Saalbach for further knee problems.
In his palmares 13 World Cup victories (6 super-g, 6 downhill and 1 giant) with 44 podiums, a super-g crystal ball in 2008 and world gold, in the same discipline, at Beaver Creek 2015 , four years after the silver medal in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Many, however, will especially remember the legendary feat in the 2014 downhill on the Streif, when Hannes competed in Kitzbuehel in precarious conditions, with enormous back problems, won and then ended up under the knife a few hours later for the operation that had to solve a huge herniated disc, so much so that he gave up the Olympics in Sochi, he who never managed to win a medal at the Games (three participations between Turin and PyeongChang, with a 10th, an 11th and a 12th place). "I had the feeling that after 20 years in the cup, it was time to say goodbye - said Reichelt through the OESV press office.
