Egon Zimmermann will remain a legend of Austrian skiing, after he died on the evening of Friday 23 August, at the age of 80.
Born in Lech on 8 February 1939, the Vorarlberg champion lived the most important day of his career at the home Olympics, when he won gold in the downhill, asking the Patscherkofel in a race that saw him triumph with 74 cents of margin on the French Leo Lacroix and 1 "32 on the German Wolfgang Bartels.
Zimmermann, a permanent presence for many editions in the Streif parterre, on the occasion of the Kitzbuehel competitions that had now become his second home after moving to Tyrol, had also graduated world champion two years before the Innsbruck Games, on the occasion of the World Championships of Chamonix ''62 when it won the gold in giant and brought home also the bronze in descent. He also did in time, before retiring at only 29 years old, in March 1968, to play the first two seasons of the newly formed World Cup, debuting in what is the maximum skiing circuit in January 1967.
