Born and raised in Ramsau, Tritscher fell on the Styrian side of the Dachstein at 7 am from Scheichenspitze, 2667 meters. Not seeing him come back, the family members have ordered a search order with the helicopter but at his discovery, at 17.45, we could not help but notice the death.
Tritscher was one of the few to prevail in all Alpine skiing specialties valid for the World Cup until 1974 and was the first Styrian athlete to win one: he won a slalom (in Wengen) and two giants in Kranjska Gora and Squaw Valley in 1969 and the descent of Val d'Isère in December 1972 with the number 45, a few days after the triumph of Piero Gros in the same place in giant at its absolute debut.
In 1969 he finished the season in third place in the general classification and second in the general one but when he seemed ready to assault the overall standings he suffered the first of the three serious fractures that completely blew him off the following season. On his return he had become a specialist in the descent and fast giants, making more effort in the technical ones and in the slalom.
In addition to his four wins in the Cup he climbed four more times on the podium, two in giant in 1968 and two down in 1972 and 1973, and ended 28 more times in the top ten. At the Games of Sapporo 1972, his only Olympics, he was eighth in giant. Two other fractures, in particular the last of 11 November 1975 at the right ankle in a downhill training session at Hintertux, forced him to definitively close his career.
He later worked as a sales clerk but was also a ski instructor and guide. He left his wife Helma, with whom he opened a bed and breakfast in his Ramsau am Dachstein, and two sons, Patrick and Elmar.
