"It is time to say goodbye - writes Hargin on Instagram -. I leave the World Cup circuit after this week's Team Event in Andorra. I have already made my last slalom (he did not qualify for the specialty final, Ed. .) It seems a bit 'strange, but also exciting and interesting. I have always given 200% to the sport, pushed as much as I could to try to fight for the podium and win races. I have always believed in myself, but "Now I have reached a point where I feel I no longer have what it takes to win races. So it's time to change, time to find a new challenge in life. I am very grateful for all the memories, the friends I met, the adversaries who pushed me, but above all, for all the support I had over the years. To all those who helped me try to reach my goals, thank you for believing in me! The biggest thanks goes for everything the support of all of you, thanks for all the 'affection'. The journey did not end here, we will see what the future will offer â€.
Born October 7, 1985 in Haninge, Stockholm County, Mattias Hargin is the younger brother of Janette and Christine, who are also World Cup skiers (the first was placed second in conjunction with Are in 2002). Almost exclusively slalomist, Mattias made his debut on December 22nd 2004 in Flachau, his 135th and last individual Cup race took place in Schladming last January 29th, but then he participated in his seventh world, the sixth consecutive, the home one of Are, arriving however far from the medals zone both in the slalom and in the Event Team, a race in which two years ago in St. Moritz won the bronze, to the junior ones instead it was silver in Bardonecchia 2005, naturally in slalom. In three Olympics he never did better than seventh place in Sochi 2014 at the individual level, while at the senior World Championships he was twice fifth, in 2009 and 2015.
He was a slalomist with few peaks but extremely constant, so much to finish eight times in the top ten in the specialty ranking, including seven consecutive between 2009 and 2015 and as the best result in the final ranking was fifth place in the 2014. He placed 53 times in the top ten, six of which in the parallels, of all these placings between 2011 and 2017 seven were podiums, for a total of a first place in Kitzbuehel, not just any race, on 25 January 2015, a place of honor and five third places. In the European Cup he won 8 races and collected another 13 podiums between 2005 and 2015, he was first in 2006 and 2009 and second in 2013 in the slalom ranking and sixth overall in 2006. He did not have any serious injuries but suffered a terrible mourning for the tragic death of the wife he had married a few months ago, the freerider Matilda Rapaport, who was buried under an avalanche in Chile on July 18, 2016. Good life without the Mattias races!
